DISTRICT INDUSTRIES CENTRE, GANJAM, BRAHMAPUR

Objectives & Roles:

The District Industries Centre, Ganjam, Berhampur is the nodal agency at the district level for sustainable industrial development of the district. The IPRs of 1980, 1986, 1992, 1996 and 2001 declared by the State Govt. has provided various incentives for the sustained growth of industries. A new IPR-2007 has already been pronounced by the State Govt. from 2ND March 2007. In addition to this, Govt. of India has also declared a no. of policy initiatives for the growth of small scale sector. The district has got the potential for development of medium, small scale, cottage, village and micro enterprises.

Micro & Small Enterprise (MSE) Sector:

Till 31/03/2012, 9410 nos of Micro & Small Enterprises have been promoted with an investment of Rs. 259.91 crore providing employment of 42,493 persons in the district. Further DIC, Ganjam has issued Permanent Registration Certificate (PMT) / Entrepreneur’s Memorandum No.-II to 3781 MSME enterprises till 31/03/2012. Most of the units have come up on agro based, food processing, engineering & allied, mineral based (Granite, Stone chips etc.), essential oil and other service sector.

Small Scale Cluster:

The Director of Industries, Odisha in consultation with MSME Development Institute and UNIDO have declared development of the following cluster in the district of Ganjam. To monitor development of following clusters steps has already been taken by the Directorate of Industries for undertaking diagnostic study & sensitization meeting & help facilitate soft & hard component assistance under MSECDP to develop cluster programme.

Cashew Processing Cluster:

More than 76 cashew-processing units have already been promoted in the district. The total production & turnover of the processing industries are 5,000 MT of cashew kernels valued at Rs.100.00 crore. Employment opportunities have been created for 7200 persons. A Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) in the name of “Jagannath Cashew Cluster” with headquarter at Rambha has been formed. At present 11,000 MT of cashew nuts are produced in the cluster area (30 km. radius covering 04 blocks). Present turnover of the cluster is about 3000 MT of cashew kernel valued at Rs.75.00 crores. The SPV has submitted the project report for soft and hard component in the cluster. After getting funds for soft activities, they are undertaking the activities as per their programme.

Kewra Processing Cluster:

Presently 150 no. of Kewra essence manufacturing units are working in the district and nearly 3000 persons have been engaged in production of essential oil (rooh), attar and kewra water. A diagnostic study report has been prepared and plan of action has been earmarked for change of technology and increasing of marketing network. The Technology Support Centre for Kewra Industry is working at B/1&2, Industrial Estate, Berhampur for quality testing and promoting the Kewda & aromatic sectors. The present turnover of kewra industries is Rs.81.50 crores. A Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) in the name of “Ganjam Kewra Development Trust” has been formed with office at Hill Patna, Berhampur under Indian Trust Act 1982 encompassing the producer, aggregators, distillers and traders. The Ganjam Kewda Development Trust has been awarded geographical indication number 228 for both the products, i.e., Kewda flower and Kewda rooh. The detail project for soft and hard component is under process.

Granite Processing Cluster:

The lavender blue colour granites are available in Ganjam district. A granite cluster is being developed in Kukudakhandi, Digapahandi and Rangailunda Blocks of Ganjam district. In the mean time more than 36 granite slab cutting & polishing units have come up in the area and other 10-15 units are likely to establish in the district. The validation of diagnostic study report pertaining to granite cutting & polishing industry in the district has been conducted and report submitted to D.I., Odisha vide letter no.1302 dtd.05/05/2011. SPV has been formed under Indian Trust Act vide no. 226 dt. 18.2.2010. The project is under process for soft & hard components.

Ayurvedic Cluster:

A cluster of 38 ayurvedic manufacturing units have been established in the district and a S.P.V. namely “Rushikulya Ayurvedic Cluster” has been formed. Project proposal for financial assistance to set up a testing laboratory, raw material bank etc. has been prepared and submitted to Govt. of India (Ayush) under cluster development programme. 1st installment of hard component of Rs. 2.20 crores has been received for civil construction.

Rice Milling Cluster:

The APITCO, Berhampur has been entrusted for the Diagnostic Study Report of the rice milling cluster for Berhampur & Chhatrapur sub-divisions of the district. They have conducted a meeting of the stakeholders of the said cluster. The validated Diagnostic Study Report (DSR) has been submitted to Director of Industries, Odisha.

Handicraft and Cottage Industries:

The main handicrafts of the district are applique, brass & bell metal, betel nut, coir and soft toys, coconut shell craft etc. The manufacture of flexible brass fish of Belaguntha area is a unique craft of the district.

Coir Industries:

For upgradation of skills of artisans’ one Coir training-cum-demonstration-cum-service sub-center is working at Golabandha with an intake capacity of 20 trainees. Duration of the training is 6 months and there is a provision of stipend to the trainees @ Rs.500/- per month. Recently a coir cluster development programme for 75 women artisans (five of Self Help Groups) have been implemented in Berhampur Municipal area. Further margin money assistance is given to 15 nos. coir artisans under “Rehabilitation of Coir Artisans” scheme.

Salt Industries:

A model salt farm is being developed at Huma with financial support from state govt. and Salt Department, Govt. of India over a patch of land measuring 10 acres. The project has been implemented by the direct supervision of senior scientist of CSMRI, Bhabanagar and Gujarat. Further 234 nos. of beneficiaries have been selected for getting dwelling units under Namak Mazdoor Awas Yojana (NMAY), out of which 217 houses have been completed. Further 107 nos. of beneficiaries have been selected during 11TH Eleventh Five Year Plan to avail the NMAY houses. After receipt of clearance from Central Govt., the work will be started.

 

Panchayat Samiti Industries Sector:

There is only one working Panchayat Samiti Industry (P.S.I.) in the district, namely Mahaveer Carpentry Industrial Co-operative Society Ltd., located at Chatrapur is running satisfactory. The society is engaged in production of wooden furniture, doors, shutters and M.S. fabrication items. The total working members of the society are 42. The production & sales turnover of the unit are as given below.
