Objectives & Roles:

Office of the Assistant Director (Handicrafts), Ganjam, Berhampur is the district level office for the Handicrafts Artisans of the District to give self-employment and sustainable development of the artisans. In Ganjam approximate 3500 numbers of artisans practicing the different Crafts and living their lives. The Handicraft schemes of Govt. of Odisha is being implemented by this Office i.e Silpi Unnati Yojana (SUY), Capacity Building Training Programmes (MCM Training, Guru Sishya Programme, Crafts Village Programme), Workshed-cum-Housing, Exhibition, Exposure Visit etc for livelihood development of artisans and for creation of new artisans. Different Craft Clusters are created where large number of artisans are practicing the like craft. Flexible Brass Fish Craft is the unique craft mainly practices by the artisans of Bellaguntha from where this Craft is originally originated from.For women empowerment the SHG group are giving preference to involve in the Craft and to make them the Producers Group.

Handicrafts in the District:

Ganjam is the land of enchanting beauty is well known for its exquisite Handicrafts in Brass & Bell Metal, Straw Craft, Pattachitra, Applique, Stone Carving, Flexible Brass Fish, Wood Carving , Bamboo Crafts, Coir Craft, Terracotta etc. A huge potential exists in the District for economic development in Rural areas through Self-Employment and income generation by promoting Handicrafts. The State Govt. has taken several measures for strengthening of this Sector and assisted artisans for income generation and sale of products. The district office is implementing the different state govt. schemes to generate more number of artisans through the Capacity Building Training like MCM Training Programme, Crafts Village Programme, Guru SishyaParampara etc. in the District. Financial Assistance is providing to those artisans who are intended to setup their Handicrafts Units in the district through Silpi Unnati Yojana (SUY) and also housing facility also providing to the eligible artisans under the scheme Workshed-cum-Housing. Sea Beach Festival at Gopalpur and Mohanagar Mahotsav at Berhampur Municipal Corporation are the famous Exhibitions in the District and the centre of attraction to the people. Stalls are being given to theHandicrafts artisans of the District to Display and Sale their Handicrafts Products in the Exhibitions.

Crafts Cluster in Ganjam:

Clusters are being formed where approximate 100 numbers of artisans are practices the same craft at the same place. Common Facility Centres are built in the cluster area where the artisans can easily avail their tools and equipment for manufacturing of the Crafts. Now only one CFC building is built at Jagamohan funded by the KVIC under the scheme SFURTI. The Following Craft Clusters are formed in Ganjam District:
1. Mamudiha (Aska Block)- Brass & Bell Metal Craft
2. Kanchana (Khallikote Block)- Applique Craft
3. Dimiria (Khallikote Block)- Terracotta Craft
4. Jagamohan (Dharakote Block)- Brass & Bell Metal Craft
5. Beguniapada- Bamboo Crafts
